When a mobile phone here blares a CD-quality song, signaling an incoming call, it is most certainly a tune provided by KDDI. The soft and elegant tune of chaku-uta, or ring tunes — as opposed to the tinny, simplified ring tones — is one of the latest must-haves for many Japanese mobile-phone users. That is music to KDDI's ears, because it is helping attract new customers to its AU cellular service, long considered an also-ran in Japan.
